Worn Out and Stressed Out! Business

6/17/2016

Since the beginning of my first year in business as I began hiring people, I started noticing a trend. After scheduling approximately twenty people for interviews, only one would show up. Some were no call no show, others had lame excuses and the one was a keeper! Somehow these people couldn't even make it for the interview. Why even apply? The majority didn't stop there. This season alone I have dealt with many no call no shows, ridiculous excuses why they can't show up, lack of desire, piss poor attitudes, can't seem to follow orders, do a crappy job, only can work when they want to based around whatever they feel like doing as long as it doesn't pertain to working, but yet they all want money! I hired someone to show up their first day on the job, right when they are supposed to be there working in the unit, after me calling them several times and leaving text messages (with no quick response) and yet finally telling me they can't make it because they got rear-ended by a beer truck and on the way to the hospital. Should I have believed it? Okay, This was just a spot on the road and didn't stop me from traveling to my appointed destination, business as usual.

A few years ago I was without a car and little hope. This did not stop me from doing my very best at any job I had, whether it was waiting tables or cleaning condos. I either took a cab, trolley or rode my bicycle sometimes thirteen miles a day, up hill, in the scorching heat of summer to make it to work. I did just that! Every shift, every schedule and every time they had work for me, I took it. Not only was it determination or integrity that drove me, it was also the need to survive. In my experience, Golden opportunities don't always come in shiny wrappers, they come in forms no one would ever expect. Hidden in plain sight. That is why I was always driven to succeed even when failure was written on my forehead.  Am I an exception to this generation? Over zealous? This WAS how all of America's workforce used to be.

Right now we run a small vacation rental cleaning business in luxurious 30A, the cream of the crop, the royal destination, one of America's finest places to visit. I will admit, this place is extremely breathtaking and full of vibrant life. Who wouldn't want to stay there? This is also the very reason why we should hire someone who cares about the guests, the property, the job and themselves.

Oh my goodness! Who am I kidding? That's like finding a needle in a haystack! Not impossible though. Can be done. Right now I have two of the most incredible people who are powerhouses working for me, and no you cannot have their names, they are too awesome for you. Bad thing is we are wearing them out because the lack of finding good help such as them or others who may be out there hiding.

Complaining? No. I'm frustrated with the lack of ability one shows for caring. It seems like most of the people coming to apply or get hired only care about one thing, when's pay day. Wait! That's if they even show up. Good grief! When is this unemployment nonsense going to stop? People can't get a job? Really?! Oh wait, they have to meet our company's guidelines and criteria, such as: Reliable transportation, working cell phone, ID. Must be able to follow directions, show up, do a good job, be respectful....Is this too much to ask from our generation of workforce society? Part-time, excellent pay!!! What more could anyone ask for, especially when most jobs don't fill full time expectations. The saddest thing about all of this is there are a lot of people who are hungry and need a job and people are just throwing it away. As bad I would have hated to ever ask this question: Could this be one of the reasons why American's are called lazy?

You don't have to have a degree to feel the sting of student loans. For many all across America, this is a painful reality. During the long hot Summer months of 2001, I was contemplating on how it didn't seem to be the best year for attending college, even though it was the most important thing I longed for.
